During excavations for the V by Crown development, the remains of early European convict settlements were discovered. Archaeological analysis revealed these huts to have been established during the first wave of European settlement in Australia.

A contemporary and historically sympathetic design, complementary to the new V by Crown building

FRD created a heritage interpretation report that recommended the remnants and the archaeological artefacts of the V by Crown site be presented in a way that was both complementary to the contemporary design of the new building, and also sympathetic to the style and history of the material culture of the past periods.

The stories told in the exhibition form a coherent narrative that unfolds gradually; however, visitors can also read them selectively, without the need to be familiar with all components. Historical materials of delicate watercolor paintings, pencil sketches and engravings are combined with the precise detail and finish of joinery units. Encased glass and ceramics express the delicacy, fragility and resilience of the archaeological remnants and artefacts.

Graphic installations and three-dimensional exhibition components frame this archaeology clearly for the visitor, further enhanced by a platform allowing the site to be viewed from above.
FRD developed this exhibition in situ, drawing stories from more than 18,000 artefacts discovered at the site.
