In January 2012 the Queensland Museum reopened its doors, boasting a new foyer and Discovery Centre design by FRD

FRD developed a major multimedia display that reveals back of house activities at the museum entrance. Other parts of the foyer design included a seating unit, object display plinths and an honour board.

In the Discovery Centre, a display on sharks was chosen to represent an area of museum study. Video screens displayed archival footage of early research and contemporary footage of modern researchers using state of the art technology. Context was provided through anthropological research into traditional Indigenous uses of shark teeth and contemporary shark paraphernalia. We integrated new seating and showcases around existing live aquariums, and developed a new interactive inquiry desk with signage and an activity zone to dissolve the barrier between the visitor and the museum. Graphically, a vibrant and contemporary colour palette and large format graphics drawn from the museum’s animal and insect collection was used to bring the space to life.
