Museum of Sydney Harbour

Concept Proposal

Master Planning. Creative Direction. Visitor Experience Design. Research. Writing.
Site Inspection and Study. Workshops. Graphic Design. Heritage Interpretation.

A proposal for a world-class cultural tourist attraction for Sydney Harbour and a new home for Sydney Heritage Fleet.

FRD was commissioned to plan a new museum incorporating and reconceptualising the Sydney Heritage Fleet collection, to create an engaging, immersive world-class experience intended to play a key role in Sydney’s tourism recovery.

Through in-depth site analysis, workshops, research and creative and thematic review, FRD proposed the new Museum combine the historic Harbour-relevant vessels and other collection items of Sydney Heritage Fleet, as well as the Fleet’s restoration and maintenance workshops.

FRD proposed the headquarters of the Museum be located as a contemporary built form at a revitalised Berry’s Bay, to provide an opportunity for the adaptive reuse of a long neglected site, and a permanent and self-sustaining legacy from the road works for the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.  The Museum HQ will form a recognisable starting point – a portal – to the attraction of Sydney Harbour, through which the visitor will be able to experience the Harbour.
