This temporary exhibition featured over 70 magnificent textiles and robes from imperial Ming and Qing dynasty China

The display of these lavishly embellished yet extremely fragile textiles, ranging from delicate embroideries in silk floss, gold-wrapped thread and peacock feathers to heavily beaded and jewelled robes weighing many kilograms, presented a range of special design challenges. An important element of FRD’s design approach was to reuse existing gallery showcases, supplemented with the custom design of a central platform, and special object supports and plinths which could themselves be reused by the gallery in subsequent exhibitions.
